My neighbor had been secretly charging her electric car from my house every night. Instead of calling the police, I came up with a better way to teach her a lesson.

I’m Marjorie, a 64-year-old widow living alone in the suburban home I once shared with my late husband, Henry. Because my routine rarely changes, my electricity bill is usually between $105 and $120 a month.

That was why I was stunned when my latest bill arrived for $227.

At first, I assumed there had been a mistake. I hadn’t bought any new appliances, I barely used the air conditioner, and nothing inside the house seemed to be malfunctioning.

When I called the electric company, a representative showed me something strange. For nearly 3 months, a large amount of electricity had been used late at night, usually for 10 to 12 hours at a time.

I even hired an electrician, but he found nothing wrong inside my home.

Then, several nights later, I couldn’t sleep. Shortly after midnight, I heard a faint humming sound outside my bedroom window.

I pulled back the curtain—and nearly dropped my glass of water.

My neighbor Vanessa’s white electric car was parked unusually close to my garage. A thick black charging cable stretched across the lawn and plugged directly into the outdoor outlet on the side of my house.

I threw on my robe, grabbed a flashlight, and hurried outside.

“Vanessa, what exactly are you doing?”

She looked up from her phone and shrugged.

“Charging my car.”

“I can see that. Why are you charging it from my house?”

Vanessa rolled her eyes as if I were the one behaving unreasonably.

“Oh, come on, Marjorie. You live alone. How much electricity could you possibly use?”

I stared at her in disbelief.

“That electricity belongs to me. My bills have nearly doubled because of you.”

She sighed dramatically.

“I have 3 children and errands to run all day. You’re retired. You mostly sit at home. It’s not like you need all that electricity.”

My hands tightened at my sides.

“Have you been doing this for the past 3 months?”

“Not every night,” she muttered.

According to my usage records, she had charged her car on 27 of the previous 31 nights.

When I told her how much my bill had increased, she laughed.

“I’ll give you $10 if you’re that worried about it. Honestly, Marjorie, don’t be so greedy.”

Greedy.

Vanessa owned a brand-new electric car, lived in a newer house, and kept a beautifully landscaped yard. She wasn’t struggling financially. She simply believed she was entitled to anything she wanted.

This wasn’t the first time she had crossed a line.

Months earlier, my garden gnome had disappeared from my yard. Henry had bought it for me shortly before he passed away, so it meant far more to me than its price suggested. Two days later, I spotted it beside Vanessa’s front steps, repainted blue.

Another time, she took my lawn mower from the garage without asking and returned it 6 days later with an empty tank and wet grass packed beneath it.

Each time, I stayed quiet because I wanted to keep the peace.

But standing outside after midnight while Vanessa stole my electricity and insulted me for objecting, I finally understood that my silence had never created peace.

It had only taught her that I wouldn’t stop her.

“Unplug your car,” I said firmly.

“I’m almost finished.”

“Unplug it now.”

Vanessa yanked the cable from the outlet and began coiling it.

“This is exactly why I didn’t ask,” she complained. “I knew you would turn it into a whole thing.”

I didn’t argue. I simply smiled, returned to my house, and locked the door.

The next morning, I called the electrician again. Then I installed a security camera and made several additional changes near my garage.

My daughter Leah became nervous when I told her I had a plan.

“Mom, whatever you’re doing, please don’t get arrested.”

“Don’t worry,” I assured her. “Vanessa will be perfectly fine—as long as she stays on her own property.”

That night, shortly after midnight, Vanessa returned with her headlights off. She parked beside my garage, stepped out carrying her charging cable, and confidently crossed into my yard.

The moment she approached the outdoor outlet, something happened.

Vanessa screamed so loudly that lights came on throughout the neighborhood. Within seconds, people were rushing from their homes to discover what was going on—and what they saw left Vanessa with nowhere to hide. ⬇️
