Critical Reception
“Righteous Thieves” currently holds a 60% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with an average rating of 5.5/10 based on 5 reviews. While the film has not received widespread critical acclaim, some reviewers have praised the performances of Sisto and McGowan.
David Nusair of Reel Film Reviews writes, “Sisto and McGowan are both perfectly cast and turn in engaging performances that help compensate for the film’s somewhat sluggish midsection.” Similarly, Frank Ochieng of Film-Addict.com notes, “Sisto and McGowan share a quirky and easy-going rapport that is serviceable and lends a bit of lightheartedness to the overall tonality of the film.”
However, other reviewers have criticized the film’s pacing and lack of originality. Frank Scheck of The Hollywood Reporter writes, “Despite the best efforts of the cast, ‘Righteous Thieves’ fails to generate the level of laughs or suspense that it desperately needs.” Likewise, Nick Allen of RogerEbert.com notes, “As much as the filmmakers want to throw curveballs and make their mark, it’s hard to say if there’s anything in ‘Righteous Thieves’ that hasn’t been done in other crime-comedies before.”
